Oakland Fire Chief Mark Hoffmann, former Oakland Mayor Elihu Harris and others are expected to participate in a block party in East Oakland that's one of hundreds of National Night Out events in Oakland and across the Bay Area and the nation tonight.

The event, which will be held at the corner of Fleming Avenue and High Street from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. tonight, is sponsored by La Bamba Magazine, WyoTech, Los Mexicanos Market, the Casa Jimenez Family Restaurant and Radiator Engineer.

The block party will include free barbecue and music and will showcase vehicles from Oakland's police and fire departments.

According to the office of Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, Oakland will have more than 550 National Night Out events tonight, well above its goal of having at least 500 such events.

Oakland had 457 National Night Out events last year, according to Quan's office.
