Pedestrians, bicycles return to Golden Gate Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO

The Marin Independent Journal reports the east sidewalk reopened early Saturday, allowing people to walk across the iconic span again. The east sidewalk, normally devoted to foot traffic, had been shut near the north anchorage house since Sept. 13.

Bicyclists, but not pedestrians, wereour given access to the west side sidewalk.

Now pedestrians and bicyclists will once again share the east side of the span. Bikes will be allowed on the west sidewalk on weekends as well as on weekdays between 3:30 p.m. and sunset.

The newspaper says normal use patterns returned sooner than expected. Officials had thought the work would take until January to complete.
