Bar pilot changed lanes before striking Bay Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO

The San Jose Mercury News reports the pilot had planned to follow a lane, but for some unknown reason, changed lanes to cross near Yerba Buena Island.

The Overseas Reymar clipped a tower, causing millions of dollars in damage. Investigators say there was fog, a swift current and a navigation beacon on the bridge where the pilot first planned to cross wasn't working. Sixty-one-year-old bar pilot Guy Klees has tested negative for drugs and alcohol.
