Driver arrested after fatal crash on NB Hwy 85

SAN JOSE

Officers responded to a report of a crash on northbound Highway 85, just south of Camden Avenue, at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said.

A man driving a black Nissan Maxima was speeding and rear-ended a 1966 red Volkswagen Beetle, according to Caggiano.

The Beetle overturned in the middle lane and the Maxima came to a stop in the shoulder, according to Caggiano.

Caggiano said the man driving the Beetle was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries. His name has not yet been released.

The driver of the Maxima suffered just minor injuries.

Intoxication and speed appear to be a factor in the crash and the driver of the Maxima may face charges, according to Caggiano.

After being released from the hospital, the Maxima driver was arrested and booked into the county jail on suspicion of various charges, according to the CHP.

A Sig-alert was issued at 11:44 p.m. The roadway remained closed for several hours as crews cleared the roadway and the crash was investigated.

The Sig-alert was canceled at about 4 a.m.
