The Sonoma County city of Healdsburg could soon be the first city in the state to raise the minimum age for buying cigarettes from 18 to 21.

On Tuesday night the city council gave the go ahead for the city attorney to prepare an ordinance prohibiting the sale of tobacco to anyone younger than 21.

Mayor Jim Wood says doing anything to make it harder for teenagers to smoke is the least he can do to keep them from getting lung cancer and "dying a miserable death."
