Bay Area LIFE: Discover the charming city of Oakdale
If you have ever made the drive from the Bay Area to Yosemite, chances are the route has taken you straight though Oakdale, California.

OAKDALE, Calif. (KGO) -- If you have ever made the drive from the Bay Area to Yosemite, chances are the route has taken you straight though Oakdale, California. And, while you may be accustomed to taking a left turn away from this quaint town, next time you might want to stop, take a right and check out the "Cowboy Capital of the World."

One of the main attractions in town is the Oakdale Rodeo. It was the first outdoor rodeo in the Western United States, and has been held rain or shine since 1954. A hugely agricultural area, in the 1950's and 60's, Oakdale brought many young "cowhands" into the area who worked on the local ranches during the week and entered rodeo competitions on the weekends, taking numerous titles and bringing national acclaim to Oakdale.

While in town you can explore the Cowboy Museum, the western-style saloon H-B or check out Oakdale's heritage museum. Cheese enthusiasts can also find award-winning cheese made right in town at Oakdale Cheese and Specialties, best known for their Gouda. In Oakdale visitors can also find a charming downtown area lined with restaurants and antique shops.
