Moldy schools are forcing more than a thousand Salinas elementary school kids into portable classrooms.

Students at four Alisal Union School District campuses -- Cesar E. Chavez, Creekside, Dr. Oscar F. Loya and John Steinbeck -- will be in portables while mold removal continues.

About 1,200 students at three schools are in portables so far. The district will relocate classrooms this spring at Steinbeck Elementary. The cost of the mold removal hasn't been disclosed.

The mold has been growing inside school room walls for years. Mold can lead to respiratory illnesses.
