Firefighters clear Fairmont Hotel fire

SAN JOSE, CA

The call came in around 5:00 this morning. Numerous fire engines sped to the hotel on Market Street. Firefighters fanned out around the first floor, searching for where the smoke was coming from. They finally determined it had come from a lit cigarette butt that caught a planter in the lobby on fire.

There were no injuries. The Fairmont Hotel consists of twin, 20-story towers, with 805 rooms and suites. It's a non-smoking hotel.
