The boy and his father were in the front yard of their house in the 2300 block of Cambridge Drive around 7 p.m. when the father heard a popping noise, sheriff's Sgt. Dan Poplin said. The child then started to cry, and the father found the boy had a wound in his chest, Poplin said.
The father did not see where the shots came from, and deputies searched the area without finding a suspect.
The boy was airlifted to Children's Hospital & Research Center in Oakland and is "doing fine," Poplin said.
An investigation into the incident will likely not continue unless new leads are discovered, Poplin said.
