Monterey County Animal Services warns pet owners to keep a watchful eye on their beloved animals this holiday weekend, when more furry friends go missing than at any other time of year.
With their acute sense of hearing, many animals will do anything to escape the noise, including chewing through leashes, jumping out windows, digging under fences and bolting away from owners, sometimes into traffic.
County officials urge pet owners to keep pets indoors or in the garage when fireworks are being set off, and if pets go missing to call the local animal shelter.
