O'Sullivan started training camp as the third-stringer, but outplayed Alex Smith and Sean Hill in practice, and then showed he could perform in preseason games, shining against Chicago.
That leaves the former savior of the franchise Smith relegated to the back-up role. Smith has struggled with accuracy and clashed with Coach Nolan last season.
Today, ABC7's ex-49er Mike Shuman asked Martz if Smith was given a fair shot to win the job:
Martz: First of all, let me tell you this -- there is nothing fair about this league. If you establish yourself as an incredible player with a core of a game, then that's just the way it goes. There is nothing fair about this game, so you understand that, first of all.
Shuman: I played the game, I understand that.
Martz: Good, then you know it's not fair, don't you?
