Around 1 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to an alarm at the high school gymnasium, police said. Upon arrival they found a vehicle being driven on the front lawn of the campus and stopped the driver, Brian Butcher, a 34-year-old Saratoga resident.
Butcher was found to have flammable materials in his possession. Police believe he intended to use them to set fire to the school.
The storage building on the football field had been forced open, and a shot put had been thrown through the glass door to the gymnasium. No fires had been started on the campus, police said.
Bucher was booked into Santa Clara County jail and is being held on $30,000 bail.
