49 citations issued in Novato crosswalk sting

NOVATO, CA

Capt. Jim Berg said police made 61 traffic stops between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Plainclothes Novato police employees acted as pedestrians and crossed the street only when approaching vehicles were far enough away to come to a complete stop, Berg said.

Nearby officers on motorcycles issued citations to motorists who failed to stop. Police videotaped the violations.

The operation was conducted at South Novato Boulevard and Yukon Way; Diablo Avenue and George Street; Grant Avenue at Eighth Street; Novato Boulevard at St. Paul Circle; San Marin Drive and Serano Way; and Novato Boulevard at Estates Drive.

Police chose those intersections because of higher-than-average accident rates or because of complaints about vehicles failing to yield to pedestrians.

Petaluma police also participated in the operation.

Berg urged all drivers to be respectful of pedestrians, especially with Halloween approaching.
