The world-famous Mavericks Surf Contest near Half Moon Bay is facing a new challenge this year, the economy.

The annual contest attracts tens-of-thousands of spectators to Pillar Point Harbor, who watch for free.

Mavericks relies mostly on sponsors for revenue but organizers say they've had difficulty attracting sponsorship money recently.

They say there is currently no concern the event would be cancelled, but its organizers may lose money.

There's no word yet when the waves will be right for this season's contest.
