Oakland settles suit against housing authority

OAKLAND, CA

City officials filed suit in February of 2007 over conditions at thousands of public housing units. The complaints included lack of routine maintenance, leaky roofs and mold.

The settlement includes improved security for residents, stronger communication between the two entities, and clear policies for reporting and tracking maintenance problems.

The housing authority is Oakland's largest landlord, with some 3,300 apartments.
