Early transfer for Oakland homicide chief

Oakland police's homicide chief will soon be transferred to patrol duties. But officials say the move is not related to the controversy surrounding the murder investigation of journalist Chauncey Bailey

Authorities say Lieutenant Ersie Joyner III will be transferred in March prior to his anticipated promotion to captain.

The homicide department has received criticism for its handling of the investigation of Bailey's murder in August 2007.

Bailey was working on a story on the controversial Your Black Muslim Bakery.

An internal probe revealed this week that investigators mishandled a witness statement until it was discovered by the prosecutor. And there have also been ethical questions surrounding the department's investigation.
