Report: layoffs are accelerating

WASHINGTON The Labor Department says the number of laid off workers filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose to 586,000 last week, up by 30,000 from the previous week -- that's the highest level since 1982. Statewide unemployment is at 8.4 percent, up from 5.7 percent in November 2007.
