The San Mateo City Council unanimously appointed Planning Commissioner Fred Hansson to fill the council's fifth seat at a special meeting Thursday night, City Clerk Norma Gomez said today.

Hansson was chosen among 14 applicants for the vacant seat at what Gomez described as a "very smooth" selection process.

The unanimous vote for Hansson came after paper ballots submitted by the council members determined three votes in his favor and one for another applicant, Rick Hedges, according to Gomez.

The council members then held a formal vote in which Hansson was selected by all four voting members of the council, Gomez said.

Hansson is the assistant director of finance for ITS at Stanford University and is a member of San Mateo's Planning Commission.

He fills the seat of former Councilwoman Carol Groome, who in December was appointed to the District 2 San Mateo County Board of Supervisors seat.
