Free tax help for military, low-income

January 31, 2009 2:16:44 PM PST
Low-income individuals and active duty military personnel from Oakland can get free help preparing and filing their 2008 federal and state tax returns on Saturday.

The Computer and Communications Industry Association and the Intuit Tax Freedom Project are offering a tax preparation services workshop to help eligible Oakland taxpayers expedite the refund process, provide information about qualifying for Earned Income Tax Credits and familiarize taxpayers with free electronic filing services.

Services are being provided to residents who had a gross income of $30,000 or less in 2008, qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, or earned less than $56,000 serving the U.S. military in 2008 during active duty or as a reservist or national guardsman.

Any questions regarding program registration, documentation or eligibility should be directed to the Unity Council at (510) 535-6101. The event will take place at 1900 Fruitvale Ave. in Oakland from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
