A deputy officer performing a routine traffic stop in Monterey County Thursday night arrested a security guard when drugs and a loaded gun were found in his car, according to the sheriff's office.

A deputy sheriff stopped a 1978 6-door Cadillac for vehicle code violations at about 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Lemos Avenue and Davis Road just outside Salinas city limits, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.

The driver, Sterling Willis, a 27-year-old security guard from Salinas, reportedly gave the investigating deputy consent to search his vehicle, according to the sheriff's office.

The search produced a loaded .22 caliber single-shot handgun and an undisclosed amount of marijuana, the sheriff's office reported.

Willis was taken into custody and booked at Monterey County Jail, according to the sheriff's office.
