The best foods to maximize your workout results by Dr. Melina Jampolis
- Before: Healthy carbs: Fuel your workout and increase fat burning (examples: fruit and string cheese, whole grain crackers and hummus, 1/2 peanut butter and jelly sandwich on whole wheat). You really only need a snack if you haven't eaten in a few hours.
- During: Unless you are exercising for longer than an hour, you only need water during workouts. Sports drinks and fancy flavored waters just provide hundreds of extra calories and can basically negate the effect of your workouts
- After: If you won't be eating for a while, it's a good idea to get a combination of lean protein and carbs, especially after a strength training workout. Liquid is the best as it is absorbed the most quickly so the body can use it to refuel. If you have time to make a smoothie that's great; other choices would be yogurt and granola, or a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese with fruit. For the budget-conscious, purchase whey protein powder in bulk and blend it with some fresh fruit.
