/*Ed Jew*/ could have faced three years in state prison for lying about where he lived. Instead, the judge suspended that part of it and gave him on year in the county jail. He will have to serve that year after he finishes serving five years in the federal prison system on separate charges.
Jew did not want to make any waves after the sentencing, but his attorney called the length of the prison term "overdone."
"I was born and raised, educated here. San Francisco's my home. And, I love San Francisco dearly," Jew said.
"I think, between the federal and state system, this punishment is huge. And, most politicians don't receive sentences like this," said Jew's attorney Stuart Hanlon.
Like the politician he was, after the sentencing Jew shook hands in the hallway at the Hall of Justice. He went home to be with his family. He says that is what he is going to do during the couple of months he has left before he has to report to prison.
Jew was convicted in federal court of trying to extort $80,000 from local business people in San Francisco. In San Francisco Court he pleaded guilty to perjury about where he lived when he ran for office. He said he lived in San Francisco but prosecutors proved he lived in Burlingame for more than ten years.
In an exclusive interview before the sentencing, with ABC 7's Vic Lee, Jew said this has been a long and painful ordeal for him and his family.
"It was a very difficult ordeal," he said. "As I said many times, I said, 'What has occurred to me, I would not even want this to happen to my enemy.' Because, it was and it has been, and I don't know if it's going to continue, to be really difficult for my family and the community at large."
Jew must report to federal prison by July 1st to serve the five years he was sentenced to earlier this month. In the federal system inmates serve 85 percent of their time then move onto county jail for one year, where they must serve two-thirds of the time.
Jew will probably serve eight months and probation.
