The campgrounds, located south of Monterey on state Highway 1, were closed because of fire damage in 2008 as well as continuing renovations, according to park officials.

A limited number of campsites will be available in South Camp and Weyland from May 22 to Oct. 31, according to park officials. The Main Camp will not be available for reservations due to a major capital outlay project.

"We have been working hard to get this campground open in time for summer," C.L. Price, superintendent of the Big Sur sector of California State Parks, said in a prepared statement.

"This is great news because we know how important this particular campground is to hundreds of families who go here every year and we know how important this park is to the economy of the Big Sur area," Price said.

Camping reservations will begin availability on Monday, and can be made through Reserve America at http://www.reserveamerica.com or by calling (800) 444-PARK.

Visitors are also advised to check in at the ranger station or at http://www.parks.ca.gov for current trail conditions.
