The food bank says many of its new clients have recently lost relatively well-paying jobs, and have never sought assistance before. Requests at the food bank are up 20-percent from last year.
"So we're looking at putting out about 300,000 pounds of food through our network and then at the new pantry sites we're going to have an additional 20,000 pounds of food to serve people," said Christopher Wiley with the San Francisco Food Bank.
The new pantries will open in the Bayview District, the south and outer Mission Districts, and along the Van Ness, 19th Avenue corridor.
