An Assembly committee passed the measure by a vote of 6 to 1. It now goes to the full Assembly for a vote..

If passed, the bill would encourage schools to recognize the achievements of San Francisco's first openly gay supervisor.

Same-sex marriage opponent Randy Thomasson called it a "gay day" for California public schools.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed an identical measure last year.
