Copper wire blamed for June vault fire

PG&E says it now knows the source of an underground fire last month in San Francisco's Tenderloin District.

It turns out that a copper wire inside the vault at Polk and O'Farrell somehow melted and ignited another cable.

Exactly why it melted is still not known, but the fire knocked out power to 8,600 PG&E customers, and the intersection had to be shut down for several days.
