PG&E wants to raise rates 6.5 percent

PG&E wants to raise rates 6.5 percent in 2011 to fund repairs and upgrades to its power grid in part to prevent blackouts. There would be two smaller rate hikes in 2012 and 2013.

The first increase would increase the typical homeowner's monthly payment by $2.20.

State regulators need to approve the deal. The utility will make a former request in December.
