The Applied Materials Foundation announced it is giving $1 million to help as many as 56,000 needy people with food, shelter, prescriptions and transportation. The United Way Silicon Valley will distribute the funds to local nonprofit agencies.

The David and Lucille Packard Foundation is also giving over $500,000 to help struggling non-profits with restructuring, consolidations and mergers.
