Sixteen-year-old Atherton resident Nicholas Caine made the 20-mile swim in an unofficial time of 13 hours, 11 minutes.

The record is six hours, 58 minutes. A 15-year-old set that record in the 1970s.

Caine started open-water swimming at 13 and has made the swim to Alcatraz a dozen times.
