Doctors at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital helped diagnose a problem with a newborn baby 90 miles away in Salinas using a broadband connection.

The FCC has been asked by Congress to come up with a national broadband plan by next February.

"We've already got some very useful information this morning about the kind of broadband connections that hospitals like this need and that other hospitals will need to provide, the kinds of cutting edge benefits this hospital can provide," FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said.

The FCC is looking at how broadband can be used to improve people's lives. It also wants to find ways to increase the spread of broadband and promote its use.
