UC gives raises same day it slashes budget

Leaders of the University of California system approved pay raises for more than two dozen executives on the same day they cut more than $800 million dollars from the UC budget back in July.

A UC official told the San Francisco Chronicle the increased pay amounted to a "cost savings".

She says three executives who got stipends ranging from 6-25 percent took on new duties following the departure of the chief operating officer in January. That executive earned more than half a million dollars and she was not replaced.
