The event provided needy children with basic school supplies like backpacks, pens, pencils, crayons and notebooks.

"It's a pretty important thing for a kid to go back to school and feel dignified, and feel like they want to start a new year fresh, and to have some new equipment they feel they can show off to their friends," said Claire Dunmore with the Salvation Army.

Individuals and local companies donated many of the supplies.

The Salvation Army says more families are in need of help this year because of the recession.
