Officers responded shortly before 7 a.m. to a report of a body near the railroad tracks just east of Sanford Avenue at Cherry Street and found the teen shot to death, Richmond police Sgt. Bisa French said.

French said authorities believe the boy was shot sometime today, but don't know when. She said whether he was killed in that area or was brought there also remains unknown.

No suspects have been arrested, she said. At this time last year, there were 21 homicides in Richmond.

The teen is the fourth person this year to have been found dead in that area, and the third by the railroad tracks, according to French.

In February, two female victims were found murdered by the railroad tracks in separate homicide cases, French said. A man was killed on Cherry Street at Sanford Avenue in May, though not adjacent to the railroad tracks.

French said the homicides are not believed to be related.

"It's more of a secluded area, not near a bunch of houses," she said. "A lot of people walk in the area of the tracks."
