President Obama presented the medal to Milk's nephew, Stuart, at a White House ceremony two weeks ago.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the award is now being used in an attempt to persuade Governor Schwarzenegger to sign a bill to establish May 22nd, Milk's birthday, as a day of special significance.

The governor vetoed the measure last year.
