Italian researchers found a so-called Mediterranean diet reduces the likelihood that patients with type two diabetes will need drugs to lower their blood sugar.

Mediterranean diets are rich in nuts, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and healthy oils.

Researchers say people on a Mediterranean-style diet lost more weight than people on a low-fat diet, and showed more improvements in blood sugar control.

The findings are in this month's issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.
