Officers headed to a Motel 6 at 8480 Edes Ave. at 12:10 a.m. to investigate reports of gunshots and screams coming from Room 2511, police spokesman Officer Jeff Thomason said.

The first officers to arrive noticed what looked like a bullet hole in the room's window, Thomason said. When they knocked on the door, there was no answer.

They tried to use a key card to enter the room but the door had been locked from the inside and officers had to force their way in, Thomason said.

Inside, they found a man and a woman lying on the floor. Both had been shot and the man was pronounced dead at the scene, Thomason said.

The woman was taken to Highland Hospital where she was listed in grave condition, Thomason said.

Investigators believe the man shot the woman then turned the gun on himself, he said. Police are still trying to confirm the identities of the woman and the gunman.

Laura Rojo-Eddy, a Motel 6 spokeswoman, confirmed that the case appeared to be an attempted murder-suicide.

"Obviously we are quite distraught over what has happened," she said.
