The new rules prohibit logging within 30 feet of a fish-bearing stream, as well as water ways the feed into them.
The changes come after years of review and pressure to design rules that fit specific areas.
"For the fish it means a better food supply, a better habitat, and so we're hopeful that it will help the population," said George Gentry from Forestry and Fire Protection.
Federal scientists and environmental groups see the package as a step forward, but many feel they don't go far enough.
