The homes were designed by 20 teams of college students for the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon.
Over the course of the week, the homes will be judged on architecture, engineering and energy efficiency.
"Solar is out there, they can get it, but do they want it; and this is what we're trying to so to show them that it's definitely something they want to do," Roque Sanchez of Rice University said.
Team California, which is made up of students from /*Santa Clara University*/ and the California College of the Arts, is just a fraction of a point out of first place.
