Berkeley police spokesman Andrew Frankel said DNA evidence linked 52-year-old Paul Anthony McGruder to the crimes, which occurred on Dec. 30, 2008, in the parking lot of the Whole Foods Market at 3000 Telegraph Ave. and on Halcyon Court, which is just a few blocks away.
McGruder was arrested at his home in the 5900 block of Camden Street in Oakland, Frankel said. He's being held at the Alameda County Jail.
According to Frankel, McGruder pulled a gun on a woman in the parking lot of the Whole Foods store at about 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 30, 2008, and ordered her into her car.
Once the woman was inside, she screamed and McGruder punched her in the car and attempted to take control of her car, Frankel said.
But the woman fought back by stabbing McGruder in the neck with a pair of scissors, which cased him to flee, according to Frankel.
Frankel said McGruder was undeterred and attempted to carjack another woman but was unsuccessful again and fled West on Webster Street.
A few minutes later McGruder successfully carjacked a male victim on Halcyon Court and fled in his 2008 Subaru Outback, according to Frankel.
