Milk cartons were first reported to be littered throughout all lanes of southbound Highway 680 in near Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon at around 1:20 a.m., CHP Officer Haven said.

Over the next 20 minutes, the CHP receved reports of plastic cartons and milk crates scattered on Highway 680 as far south as its junction with Interstate Highway 580 in Alameda County near Pleasanton, and as far north as its junction with state Highway 4 near Concord.

At a junction between Highway 680 and state Highway 242 in Walnut Creek, milk crates, milk cartons and milk were reportedly scattered in every southbound lane, Haven said.

CHP units were responding to clear the debris to the right hand shoulder, and any traffic hazard from spilled milk along the 25-mile stretch of highway had largely dissipated by 2 a.m.

The vehicle responsible for the spill had not been located.
