Deer Valley High student shot on his walk home

ANTIOCH, CA

The victim was walking along Deer Valley Road north of Lone Tree Way at about 3:15 p.m. when two other teenage boys approached him and asked if he was a Deer Valley student, police Lt. Scott Willerford said. The suspects then demanded his money and backpack.

The victim refused and attempted to run away, but was shot in the back as he tried to escape, Willerford said. He was taken to a local hospital and his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The suspects were last seen running north on Deer Valley Road.

Willerford said the victim didn't recognize the suspects and investigators are working to determine whether they are also students at Deer Valley High School.
