A NASA craft blasted into space from Vandenberg Air Force base in southern California before dawn Monday.

The Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer or WISE will look for stars and galaxies never seen before. Mission managers say the craft will produce the most comprehensive map yet of the cosmos.

The price tag for the month-long mission is $320 million.
