A pedestrian was killed in San Jose Sunday evening after he was hit by a car while trying to cross a freeway connector, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At about 6:40 p.m., a man tried to walk across the connector from southbound state Highway 87 to northbound Interstate Highway 280, the CHP said.

A man driving a Chevrolet pickup truck hit the pedestrian and killed him.

The driver tried to avoid the pedestrian but hit him in the far right traffic lane, the CHP said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. It was still unclear this morning why he was trying to cross the connector.

The far right lane of the connector was closed for about 1.5 hours while the incident was investigated.

As of 4 a.m. today, the pedestrian had not been positively identified, the CHP said.
