Autistic children sought for clinical research study

PALO ALTO, CA

Autism, a developmental disorder that impairs a person's social interaction and communication, and imposes restricted, repetitive behaviors, afflicts one in every 150 children in the nation.

The study, conducted by Dr. Glen Elliot of Children's Health Council in Palo Alto, will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the medication, according to research officials.

Children must be at least 3 years old to participate, the age when autism is typically diagnosed, but no older than 7. Candidates must also meet the criteria for autism and must have an IQ of at least 50, research officials said.
