They can tell you what happened just before a crash occurred and you would think it could be useful for Toyota.
The company of Monty Hardy was sure hoping the black box aboard a 2008 Toyota Avalon would explain how a sudden-acceleration crash occurred that killed everyone in the car.
Toyota was ordered to decipher the data in the car's black box. The family's investigator was surprised at how little it revealed.
"What we see is a section to record brake and acceleration and there's nothing. They have for whatever reason, they decided not to program their boxes to record this information," says forensic engineer Sean Dennis.
Right now, there are no laws saying what data automakers must record.
