Kaiser Permanente looked at 700,000 youngsters and found that 7.3 percent of boys and 5.5 percent of girls were excessively overweight.
To understand what that means look at it this way -- a 10-year-old girl measuring 4'6" tall should normally weigh around 71 pounds, but the 10-year-old girls in this study weighed nearly 130 pounds. The normal weight for a 5'3" teenage girl is about 119 pounds, in this study -- that ballooned to more than 220 pounds.
Kaiser warns that this level of obesity often continues into adulthood and carries many health risks.
