Lack of funding temporarily closes children's hospice

SAN LEANDRO, CA

George Mark Children's House in San Leandro is suspending in-patient programs, meaning dying children will no longer be able to stay there.

Most of the staff was laid off Tuesday. The few remaining will continue to provide out-patient services like grief counseling.

Since opening in 2004, George Mark has provided respite care for the families of terminally-ill kids.

Directors hope to re-open after the summer, if they can get contracts with insurance providers.
