The work will not affect the Powell Street lines this time around, but improvements on those lines will be scheduled later.
The California route has the lightest ridership of the three lines. It runs 17 blocks between Van Ness Avenue and Drum Street.
Muni has budgeted about $16-million for the work.
Other funding is coming from the federal government and sales tax revenue.
