"These parents had the moral and legal responsibility to care for their child," said District Attorney Road Pacheco. "Instead, their horrible neglect led to her death."
Prosecutors said paramedics were called to Latham's home four years ago where they found 17-year-old Nanette Latham unresponsive. Tests later showed her blood glucose level to be 1295, which was more than twice the level at which someone could go into a coma.
On the way to the hospital, the type-1 diabetic teenager suffered a cardiac arrest. Experts say the teenager suffered greatly in the days before her death.
Neighbors testified that they knew something was wrong, but were denied access to the Latham home. One neighbor offered to provide Nanette a ride to the hospital, but the parents refused.
The Lathams are scheduled to return to court April 30 for sentencing. Each faces a sentence of 15 years to life in prison.
