One of the nation's biggest comic book conventions opened in San Francisco Friday.

WonderCon is a gathering for comic book lovers. Over 30,000 fans of the genre gather every year to check out comics, movies, toys and video games..

Traditional comic books have all but disappeared from most retail outlets, but many fans now find what they want in digital versions.

"A lot of people don't know where their local comic book store is," publisher Annamaria White said. "You can't buy them at 7-11, you can't buy them at the newsstands anymore, so now that you have your digital phone you can just get it right there; it opens up to a whole new audience."

This is the 24th anniversary of WonderCon, held at Mosonce Center.
